Brantley, you are a clown and way out of line on this one. Calling a recently elected mayor that you happen to disagree with a "nutcake" is poor form. Your facts are crap, your writing stinks, you're a hack who hasn't got a clue as to what the actual issues are in this case, and if I were the managing editor of your rag, you'd be fired and physically thrown to the curb. Be glad I'm not. Talk when you know what you're talking about, otherwise, sit quietly with your hands folded and get a life. You're not intelligent or educated enough to be ashamed of what you wrote, but you should be. I can't wait for the AG to deliver the opinion I'm expecting so we can shove a crow the size of a Mac truck down your deserving throat. You can eat the crow later or choke on it. Personally, I don't care. You stopped being relevant a long time ago.

In my anything-but-humble opinion: the best quotation you've ever posted here, Zath.

Steven Weinberg's incredible. I knew his daughter, Elizabeth. He drops remarks like that over coffee. You want to tape-record everything he says. He's also friends with another man I admire, Oxford bio-ethicist Richard Dawkins, whom I often quote here (who spoke three years ago in Little Rock).

"Faith is an evil precisely because it requires no justification and brooks no discussion."

Weinberg's also a staunch outspoken and rational (not religious: he's an atheist) supporter of Israel and its important role in the Middle East: another reason I admire him.

When you're fortunate enough to meet and talk with conversant pillars for Science like these, then asked to give equal respect to "people of faith" like Huckabeen (Dott's construction, which I'm appropriating) and America's current crop of Christian politicians -- and their pandering to hate, bigotry, ignorance, bullying, blind adherence to myths and superstitions, worship of unquestioned authorities -- their fascist worldwide wars against knowledge, facts and freedom -- you can't help butting up against the fact that, circa 2011, religionists represent the WORST, most destructive, elements of humanity.

From the Pope to Clint McCance, they're astonishingly, pridefully, willfully uninformed. They're goose-stepping perverse mirror-reversals of Truth: Facts are Deceit; Death is Life; War is Peace; Hate is Love.

All the while proclaiming their innocence and benignity and the "evil" of everyone else.

So thank you again, Zath, for the quote from Weinberg and reminding me -- us, hopefully -- of the highest standards of human thought, self-realization, conversation and coexistence.

Particularly on THIS thread, where we're asked to respect and accept and not examine or think critically / factually or rock the boat of "religous" groups who recruit followers and voters by appealing to the lowest, most irrational and backward elements of tribal ignorance and vengeful paranoia.

"For good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

Amen.

I respect your opinion, Tap, and think that you post some of the most meaningful comments on the blog. I know there are individual Muslims who do not subscribe to the belief that their religion must conquer all others. But I do not believe that Muhammed believed that, or that he taught that. I also think that the organized Muslim belief is that all infidels must perish and only Muslims survive. As Norma says, their primary target now is the Jews, but if they succeed in eliminating them, then the target will become everyone else who does not believe as they do,

Folks here are probably sick of my religion debates, plainjim, but I want to say for the record I disagree. (My opinion plus $1.64 will buy a cup of coffee at Starbucks!).

The writings of most faiths can be taken to condemn all others, or as a declaration of a plan to conquer all others -- for instance, some Christians say "Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Christ is Lord." That sounds downright martial.

Instead of reading what their holy book says and maybe taking it out of context, I like to come from the "know a tree by the fruit it bears" angle. I know of many Muslims, in many communities, who love peace, love America, love Christians and Jews, but most of all love Allah.

But that's just me. Cup of coffee at Starbucks again.

I think the President is marking time, thinking that he will get re-elected, and that the huge Republican majority in the House will go away in 1912. Let's be thankful that the members of the House stand for election every two years, because that is about as long as the fickle American voters are going to give their representatives to work magic. In 2012, we will hopefully get a Democratic House and a Democratic Senate, and will be able to do something. and by then I think the American public will realize that Republicans have been lying to them, and that health care is really good.

I don't believe, Tap, that there is such as being as a "pacificistic" Muslim. It is a contradiction in terms. Understand, I say this as a person who upholds their right to practice their religion, but I do think that it is a militant religion that has no tolerance for other religions.

AI, that is RICH. They're actually blaming Obama for the cuts?!
I'm not saying Obama is great or anything but Republicans are the want to slash just about everything.

"The president and his aides know that the G.O.P. approach to the budget is wrongheaded and destructive. But they've stopped making the case for an alternative approach; instead, they've positioned themselves as know-nothings lite, accepting the notion that spending must be slashed immediately — just not as much as Republicans want.

Mr. Obama's political advisers clearly believe that this strategy of protective camouflage offers the president his best chance at re-election — and they may be right. But that doesn't change the fact that the White House is aiding and abetting the dumbing down of our deficit debate.

And this dumbing down bodes ill for the nation's future. Health care is only one of the large and difficult problems America needs to deal with, ranging from infrastructure to climate change, all of which demand that we engage in a lot of hard thinking. Yet what we have instead is a political culture in which one side sneers at knowledge and exalts ignorance, while the other side hunkers down and pretends to halfway agree. " -Paul Krugman

Guess I'll have to take what you say on "faith," Tap. Since here, from the Washington post piece entitled, "W.D. Mohammed: A Witness for True Islam" are a couple of quotes.

"He [W.D. Mohammed] integrated the Nation within the American Muslim community, the broader American society, and the global Islamic community. The Nation and its teachings were brought into conformity with orthodox Sunni Islam."

Do you understand about orthodox Sunnis and Jews, Tap?

"Many years later, in 2000 W.D. Mohammed and Farrakhan publicly embraced, and declared unity and reconciliation."

Do you understand "unity and reconciliation" with the man who just last week called Jews "covers for Satan," Tap?

http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith…

On second thought, I guess I won't take your statement on "faith." Because that's just one article of many.

James of the Plains, per this and your post about "bitching" on another thread: please understand that these are, shall we say, an OLDER demographic whose impressions of "hot" are antiquated and whose ability to -- how to put this? -- DO anything about it are but dim memories. Of COURSE they're irritable.

DBI - "blond dye jobs" aren't expensive: "colorist consultations" are. Keep up.

Finally, and unfortunately, women named "Heather" were saddled with dated names by their then-trendy parents and should, like those dubbed "Tiffany" or "Buffy" or "Misty," consider a change to something more timelessly romantic like "Norma."

Besides: "Heather" carries the unfortunate connotation of Paul McCartney's plucky but gold-digging amputee ex-, and that can't be good.

All: Thanks for the comments on the new design.

But until we revamp the website again -- sooner rather than later, I hope -- you should probably steel yourself to endure scrolling past the new header. I suspect it's here to stay.

I think Gawker's redesign is largely a failure, but Nick Denton was right when he said that the traditional format of a blog is a dumb way to deliver content. Several times a week, we break big stories in the morning but continue to post throughout the day, thus driving our big story far down the blog page. This new format is a way to ensure that big stories remain as accessible as possible. Moreover, it's a way that we can plug other stories from across our website in a really prominent spot. I know a lot of you only read the Arkansas Blog. Our hope is that maybe you'll see something in the top feature spot that'll take you somewhere else on the site.

This group is not part of Min. Farrakhan's National of Islam.

"Most of the Muslim holy book urges charity and faith. Those are the verses American Muslims can embody, Hamidullah said, and the ones Islamist militants ignore all too often. His mosque is affiliated with the ministry of W. Deen Mohammed, a wholly American Muslim movement that broke away from the Nation of Islam in the 1970s to embrace traditional Islam and its teachings of racial equality."

Cuts have been made at Children's. We have lost some experienced staff to other facilities since the first of the year. Some of my fellow nurses BLAME PRESIDENT OBAMA for the budget shortfalls and pay cuts at Children's. I was speechless when one fellow nurse (R) said it was Obama's fault because he was.cutting Medicaid/Medicare. And then I said you should be proud because Republicans have wanted to make cuts for years. Then he got huffy because he is a Republican and laws of logic make their brains explode. Basically, this nurse is blaming his pay cut on Obama. This nurse loves public dole when it fattens their paycheck.

The mined lignite is to be converted to liquid fuel (ie diesel). i drive a TDI VW Jetta that runs on Diesel. It is the most fuel efficient non hybrid vehicle. I guess I get to pay more tax because of my choice to conserve fuel.

Diesel engines will be a transition to cleaner fuel sources. Europe is already doing it. This tax penalizes those that want efficient diesel cars.

How bout we tax the gasoline too since it drives a majority of our vehicles?

More details on the upcoming fundraiser for members of the Wisconsin state Senate GOP in the headquarters of a prominent DC lobbying firm are coming to light.

In short, when members of the state Senate caucus that just voted to strip state workers of their collective bargaining rights gather in the downtown DC offices of a lobbying firm founded in part by Haley Barbour, they'll be among friends.
